When & Why did nudity public nudity become frowned upon? Back in ancient times the human body surely was nothing to be afraid of. It was art and struck society as beauty, understanably. What happened to make society nowadays so opposed to nudity? In my opinion people should be able to do whatever they want and it shouldnt be so that everyone is afraid to express their bodies. Im not like perverted or anything but think about it: animals dont wear clothes, and we are animals, yes? If its a hot summer day we should have the right to be nude. | Nudity is frowned upon in societies where nudity is seen as being sexual in nature. In the Western world, for instance, a nude woman is consider sexually stimulating, while in some primitive societies, nudity is constant and not considered sexual.
I assume that the attitude towards nudity changed when man migrated away from the hot climates where Man evolved, such as Africa, and moved into colder climates. This required wearing furs and other clothing to keep warm.
Once people started covering up their bodies, a nude body became something out of the ordinary, something private that was unveiled only during sex. Being nude in public became seen as sexually provocative, and hence taboo. And that's the way it remains today.
It's all in the eye of the beholder (or the libido of the beholder), but it's a learned cultural behavior which is unlikely to change any time soon. | How much public nudity is there in France? How much public nudity really is in France? Toplessness? Near the water? Skinny Dipping or Sun Bathing? Overall on hot summer days? Male / Female? Random occasional exposed person? As I am traveling there this summer, any feedback would be great !
Thanks! | | sicko! why would you want to KNOW?! | What country is the most liberal as far as public nudity? I am a nudist in America. Here you can be naked at naturist resorts, nude beaches and locker rooms. Which country allows the most public nudity? Preferrably one where you can go anywhere nude and most of the people do. | The most liberal part of this world is definitely western Europe. Not all of it, but most. Countries like Switzerland, Germany, the Nederlands and all the ones in Skandinavia are very liberal. Not only concerning nudity. However, nudity is still something "uncommon". I mean, even if you come over here, you can't expect people just sitting around naked in the movie theatres or in cafés. It's more like... people will accept it if you for example go to a lake (or the sea) and sit around naked or you go for a swim naked. That usually won't be a problem (even if it's not a nudist resort). But that doesn't mean that most of the people or even everybody is being nude :-).
Cheers | Do you think public nudity will ever become acceptable in Western society? People today are extremely paranoid of someone seeing themselves nude probably as a result of the pressure society puts on its people to look amazing.
I for one am perfectly at ease with nudity. I don't see any reason to fear the human body or dislike it. Society's standards are ridiculous and frankly I don't agree with them.
Do you think there will ever be a time in which public nudity will be an acceptable part of western society? | | Speaking as someone who detests her own body (when I lost the tone that I had) I wish it was acceptable. Then at least, I might not feel so bad. I agree with you though. Totally. I also wish I were at ease with my body, but she is the 'embodiment' of my insecurity on an emotional level and general lack of self esteem psychologically. However, despite my hang ups, which I swear are genuine, nothing gives the release and sense of self as a foreign holiday for one born and reared in a cold climate. I find myself forgetting most of what is ugly about me in hot climates and feel more sexual. I don't think everything is down to media pressure. Those of us who have to wrap up for 11 months of the year do experience real issues about a body that we don't see for that length of time, nor have to exhibit, nor have to moisturise and maintain. Plus, not all of us are Nordic, so indeed we have to work/ hide a less than strong and healthy genetic inheritance. (I am Irish).Irish girls even freak out with the idea of getting naked for sex Just maybe an added perspective to your very valid point.:) | Why do some people think public nudity should be legalized anywhere? Naturalists: what makes you want to walk around naked in public? No offense, I'm just curious.
Other folks: I want to know what your opinion on this. What do you think about some naturalists' debating that public nudity should be legalized?
I just don't understand what's so good about public nudity, but that's just me. | Hi Stella,
You need to first know the correct terminology. "Naturalists" are persons who study nature. The term you are looking for is "Naturist."
As for public nudity and my feelings towards it as a naturist, I feel the anti-nudity laws are too strict, but there is definitely a time and place for clothing too.
I believe women should have the right to be top-free anywhere a man is allowed to be without a shirt. It should be her choice, but she should have the right to do this. It is discrimination, but our laws exist because the powers-that-be believe men would do nothing but stare at the unrestrained boobies all day. At first, that would happen, but eventually men would get used to it and bare breasts wouldn't be a big deal.
I think swimsuits are ridiculous. Men wear big baggy trunks mostly because they fear seeing another man's unit or another man seeing their's. It's all about d*%# fear. If men don't have to worry about the size of another man's d*%# then they can focus on feeling superior by having a nice chest or ripped abs. I'm sorry but the best muscled man still looks stupid when he his naked and has a pale white butt. Whereas an normal guy or even on who's a bit chubby looks better evenly colored. Then there's the whole women's swimsuit issue. OK, given the size of some bikinis, why even bother? While some women lack the confidence to wear a bikini, those that have the confidence may as well go nude. They obviously feel good enough to wear a bikini, so why bother with a few square inches of material? Wait. Ah, yes! We must keep our vital areas covered because of men. They are just way too horny to see us naked! So, we go back to my stance on top-freedom. If seeing a nude woman in a non-sexually situation was commonplace, eventually nudity would lose it's luster. Maybe we wouldn't have so many horn-ball men and maybe if men all saw each others genitals they would eventually get over their d*%# fear? Hmmmmm.
Second point about swimsuits being dumb. Do you wear clothes in the shower? No. Why do you need them in a pool or at the beach? I don't see the point other than the ones I've already listed. So, if it would be OK to be nude at the beach or the public pool, why not in the parking lot? Why not in your car on the way to the beach? Why not in the convenient store stopping on the way to the beach to get snacks and drinks? If it's OK to stop at the convenient store in the nude on the way to the beach, then why not if you are not going to the beach? What is wrong with being nude at home, leaving your home nude, driving nude to the store, shopping nude, and coming home nude? Nothing, so long as it is warm enough outside to be nude. If nudity was accepted and commonplace it would not be a big deal.
But we need clothing for protection against the elements and for workplace safety. Personally, I wouldn't care if the clerk at the department store wore clothes or not, but I would want to be able to easily identify the people who worked there, so maybe the clerks at Target could all wear red aprons or something and otherwise choose to be nude. I think firefighters need clothing, as do welders, people who work in nuclear reactors and with chemical or biological toxins. Also people who work in places where the body would be prone to a lot of burns, small cuts and scrapes should wear clothes as well (soldiers, metalsmiths, cooks, etc.) While I have to dress up for my job because it's required, I don't really have any reason why I couldn't do my job in the nude if that were acceptable. | Why do they allow public nudity at carnival parades in Rio? Why do the Carnival Queens/Samba dancers at Carnival go naked and what is the history behind it?
Why is it publicly accepted? It's no different from a strip club if you ask me. Only men, women and guyren are exposed to the public nudity of carnival. | because they are pervs.
lol I think it's just because they have a different culture and they are accustomed to different things, and it's not against the law there. | Is there any way for male prisoners to avoid public nudity? I am going to start serving a relatively short sentence soon and I am not very used to having to take my clothes off and be totally naked in front of others. Is public nudity in prison unavoidable or will I be able to avoid stripping in front of others? For example, can I just leave my underwear on during strip searches and when going into the shower? | you are not your owner of your person any longer if you are supost to get naked you will get naked. the communal showers are there everyone gets time to take a shower and that is where the big buff dudes are going to pick thier next girlfriends.
sean | Is there any country in the world that allows full frontal nudity in public? I want to move out of the US cause we're not allowed to be naked in public. This country is so sheltered! They freak out over Janet Jackson's boob falling out! I'm pretty sure the UK and France they allow public nudity.I want to go naked,I hate clothes. | | Just about any country will find a way to charge you with something if the nudity is done in a place where it's not welcome. Even if it's only "disturbing the peace". The same is true here in the US, where in some states, counties, and municipalities, it technically isn't illegal. Some of those areas have legal nude beaches, where nudity is legal and welcome. Haulover Beach near Miami is a good example of such a place. | Why is public nudity considered to be so taboo in many different societies and cultures? I know there are some places where nudity is quite normal and not thought of negatively at all but it seems that the majority think otherwise. Why? | Its too cold for starters. I live in Scotland and your lucky if its warm enough to wear a t-shirt. People have worn clothes since humans started walking the earth. Clothes are functional too, not just to keep the heat in, but they offer protection when working with wood, stone and fire.
We have a guy in Scotland called the naked rambler. He's even been on the TV because he causes such a stir. He keeps getting arrested for walking around naked. Legally he is breaking the law, but he's also breaking an overwhelming social norm and I speak for millions when I say, "WE DON'T WANT TO SEE YOUR WILLY". And, Derek, this applies to you too, we don' t want to see your tadger either.
Check out the naked rambler here... news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edin…
I'm all for nudity if its properly managed. Nudist beaches, nudist swimming pools, even a get naked day at the local gym is fine by me. Also, if you find yourself alone on a secluded beach, then sure - go for it. BUT, I don't want to see people walking past my window with their ***** out. Its not too much to ask, surely? | Where is public nudity legal around the world? To start i will be going to Ukraine and would like to know if public nudity is legal there? and where els in the world public nudity is legal or allowed/expectable? Thank you very much for your time. | There are very few countries with specific laws against nudity as practised by Naturists, i.e. discreetly. America is one of the countries most likely to have such laws, but they tend to be local laws, either in specific states or often very local to a specific town.
The Ukraine, along with many of the 'eastern block' countries, are amongst the most liberal, Naturism having been one of the few freedoms they were able to enjoy under communist rule. France is good for Naturism, but tend to prefer it to be confined to the Naturist camps or designated beaches. I would have said Spain allowed greater freedom, but Barcelona have just passed a new local law and started to fine people if caught even in a bikini away from the beach, let alone naked (for which the fine is higher). You are Ok on the beach, just don't wander off into the town.
All of Denmark's beaches are clothing optional, bar two, which is a reversal of most countries!
Nudity is not illegal in the UK, but we still have to educate some of our police forces of this fact! A naked cyclist, who was a regular sight around Cambridge recently tried his luck in Bournemouth and is currently awaiting the judges verdict and possible sentence. There is no law to specifically cover his nudity, he was charged with another 'catch-all' type of offence. The message here is, stick to the places where nudity is accepted such as designated beaches and you will be Ok. |
